    The Leadership Challenge®

Leaders are made, not born. At The Leadership Challenge®, we believe that leadership is a measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviors. We aim to inspire, encourage, and develop the next generation of leaders by liberating the leader in everyone.

The Leadership Challenge® framework grew out of rigorous research that authors James M. Kouzes and Barry Posner first began conducting in 1982. From their results emerged The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®, five easy-to-grasp concepts that leaders can follow every day to become extraordinary: Model The Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge The Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage The Heart.

The LPI®: Leadership Practices Inventory® assessment not only measures the frequency you engage in exemplary leadership behaviors leadership skills, but it also inspires the breakthrough insights needed to build positive relationships and achieve the extraordinary. This 360-degree assessment helps organizations create change towards a more motivated and productive workforce by building a culture of leadership.

Our comprehensive suite of LPI® tools is evidence-based, rigorously tested, and based on 30 years of original research and data from millions of survey respondents around the world. It enables individuals to assess the frequency at which they engage in leadership behaviors and act on their discoveries.

    The LPI® 360+ Online

The LPI® 360+ is an assessment tool to help individuals—with input from selected observers—assess their leadership competencies as measured by The Five Practices. In addition to the one-time leader and observer assessments, the 360+ provides leaders with the opportunity to complete the LPI® with observers a second time (within an 18-month period)—a second administration of the LPI® has been found to be critically-important to any ongoing leadership development initiative.

    The LPI® 360 Online

The LPI® 360 Online is an observer-based assessment tool for leaders and managers at all levels, in any organization that gathers important 360-degree insight from managers, co-workers, direct reports, and others, as well as the individual leader. It measures the frequency of specific leadership behaviors—six for each of The Five Practices. Individual leaders and their selected observers each complete the LPI®, indicating how frequently the leader engages in each behavior.

    Workshop Materials

Leadership is Everyone’s Business®. That’s what’s at the heart of The Leadership Challenge® Workshop, a practical and hands-on experience that includes assessment products and development tools, group activities, and individual exercises designed to inspire, engage, and help you develop the leadership skills needed to achieve your personal best.

Its core curriculum is structured around seven components, including five independent modules that focus specifically on each of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®:

    • Leadership is a relationship
    • The best leaders are the best learners
    • It takes practice – deliberate practice — to become a better leader
    • Leadership is an aspiration and a choice
    • Leaders make a difference
    • Leadership development is self-development
    • Leadership is everyone’s business

Each module describes the practice, reviews the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) items related to that practice, and ends with techniques that ask you to reflect on how to apply what you have learned to current leadership challenges of your own.
